Kit Harington Checks Into Wellness Retreat

Kit Harington

The immensely popular HBO series, Game of Thrones, concluded on May 19, 2019, though you wouldn’t know it based on the internet buzz, which continues unabated. Most of the talk revolves around fans’ disappointment with how the finale left things. However, some of it deals with far more pressing matters. Just 9 days later, Kit Harington, the actor that played Jon Snow, checked into a mental wellness retreat. A statement released by Harington’s publicist said, “Kit has decided to utilize this break in his schedule as an opportunity to spend some time at a wellness retreat to work on some personal issues.” Furthermore, an unnamed friend said, “The end of ‘GoT’ really hit Kit hard … He realized ‘this is it — this is the end,’ it was something they had all worked so hard on for so many years. So he had a moment of, what next?”

In hindsight, some of the comments Kit Harington made in an Esquire interview foreshadow his decision to get treated for stress and alcohol misuse. He describes his final day of shooting by saying, “I felt fine…I felt fine…I felt fine… Then I went to do my last shots and started hyperventilating a bit. Then they called, “Wrap!” And I just…broke down. It was this onslaught of relief and grief about being unable to do this again.” Earlier in the article, Harington describes the close relationships among the actors by saying, “You become really tight-knit with a family, and then you leave. You know, you fall in love with people. I don’t mean romantic love. But you fall in love with friends, and then they’re gone. That happened all the way through Thrones.”

Being Proactive About Mental Health

Kit Harington was 21 while filming the pilot for Game of Thrones, and it was his first time acting professionally in front of a camera. He spent ten years working and growing up among the group. And the feelings of loss, as well as the anxieties of an overwhelming future, are palpable in these quotes. We’re happy to hear that Mr. Harington is meeting the challenges to his mental health head-on by being proactive and seeking treatment. If you or someone you love is struggling with mental health and substance abuse or misuse, please consider medical attention.
